Stories of Wisdom from Bizah, Student of Truth

The Falsity Fear Brings

Aug 29, 2010

Bizah shared a story with Tonga. There was a father who sent his daughter down to the river to get some water for tea.

As the father was waiting for the daughter to return, a neighbor ran in and said that someone had just been found dead in the river.

“Oh, no,” the man moaned. Then he broke into tears. Soon after, he became hysterical. “My one and only daughter, I have lost her. And it is all my fault. I was the one who sent her to the river to fetch water. Oh, what will I do now? How can I go on?”

Just then the daughter entered through the doorway holding a full pail of water. “What is wrong, father?” she blurted out.

“Oh, our neighbor came in and said they found someone who had drowned in the river, and I just assumed it was you. It wasn’t though. Oh, I am so relieved, so happy.”

“Dearest father,” said the daughter.  “Why didn’t you go down to the river and see for yourself who drowned. Then you would have been dealing with fact, not assumption. You could have saved yourself that acute pain and sorrow.  You let your fear lead you to make an assumption. You placed your faith in fear, not in fact.”

“Good one,” Tonga said to Bizah.
